Maria Carolina Gomes Santiago, better known as Carol Santiago, is a Paralympic swimmer in class S12 (for athletes with visual impairment), from Pernambuco, Brazil. She represents Grêmio Náutico União (GNU). Carol was born with Morning Glory Syndrome, a congenital retinal condition that limits her field of vision. She trained and competed in conventional swimming until her teenage years and transitioned to Paralympic sports at the end of 2018.
Major achievements include:
– Paris 2024 Paralympic Games: Gold in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, and 100m backstroke; Silver in the 100m breaststroke and in the 4x100m freestyle relay (49 points);
– 2023 Manchester World Championships: Gold in the 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, and the 4x100m medley relay; Silver in the 100m breaststroke; Bronze in the 200m medley and the 4x100m medley relay;
– Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games: Gold in the 50m and 100m freestyle, and 100m breaststroke; Silver in the 4x100m mixed freestyle relay (49 points); Bronze in the 100m backstroke.

Bachelor in Physical Education from Universidade Bandeirante de São Paulo. Certified as a Level 3 swimming coach by the Brazilian Paralympic Committee. He has served as a Paralympic coach at three editions of the Games (Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024). Currently, he is the Head Coach of swimming at Clube Paineiras do Morumby. He has participated as a coach in seven World Championships.
